ENGLISH VERSION
Cuma stands for wave in reference to the conformation of the area. It was founded by an ancient Greek population, the Calcidian exiles, during the VIII century B.C. At the beginning the Greeks settled down in the isle of Pithecusa, that nowadays is known as Ischia, and then they moved on to Cuma where they found fertile fields to cultivate. The legend tells that they reached Cuma following the flight of a dove or because they were attracted by the sound of cymbals, an ancient musical instrument.
Cuma, thanks to its strategic position, became one of the most important Magna Grecia’s cities. It attracted Etruscans and Carthaginians and then it was conquered by Sunnis. Sunnis ruled on Cuma until 334 BC, the date of the Romans’ arrival. The Romans gave them the citizenship without the possibility of voting. Since then, Cuma used the Latin language and became an important ally of Rome.
These remains that we can see today are from roman times, although Cuma had its most splendid period during the Greek age. Unfortunately, it lost its importance in the following years because it was overwhelmed by Puteoli. Puteoli was defeated by the Barbarian attacks while Cuma opposed resistance because it was located on a fortificated hill. There were the Saracens invasions and many people moved on to Giugliano. As a consequence, Cuma became uninhabited and became a swamp. Afterwards, it was bonificated by Bourbons.
